Canada’s Super Visa is one of the most powerful and family-friendly immigration tools available — allowing parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to live in Canada for up to 5 years per visit, with multiple entries over a 10-year period. But starting March 31, 2026, IRCC is changing the way a host’s income is assessed — and these updates could directly affect whether your application is approved.

If you are a parent or grandparent waiting to visit Canada, or a Canadian host preparing your invitation letter, read this now — the deadline is less than two weeks away.

🗓️ Book a Consultation Now — Our licensed RCIC-IRB will review your Super Visa eligibility, income documents, and application package before and after the March 31 changes take effect.

🔔 What Is Changing on March 31, 2026?

IRCC has announced two critical updates to the host’s minimum necessary income (MNI) requirements for Super Visa applications:

1. Income Assessment Period Extended: 1 Year → 2 Years

Previously, hosts needed to prove their income for only the most recent tax year to meet the minimum necessary income threshold. Starting March 31, 2026, IRCC will assess income over a 2-year period — meaning your income history matters more than ever.

This change is designed to ensure financial stability and reduce the risk of income manipulation. If your income fluctuated significantly in recent years, it is critical to plan ahead and speak to an RCIC before submitting your application.

2. Visiting Parent or Grandparent Can Now Supplement Host’s Income

This is a significant and positive change for many families. If the host child or grandchild does not fully meet the minimum necessary income threshold on their own, the visiting parent or grandparent may now contribute their own income to help meet the requirement.

This opens the Super Visa pathway to families where the host is a younger professional still building their financial footing — a practical recognition of real-world family dynamics.

✅ Who Can Apply? Eligibility Requirements

Host Requirements (Your Child or Grandchild in Canada)

Your Canadian host must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian
  • Be at least 18 years old and living in Canada
  • Meet or exceed the minimum necessary income (MNI) — now assessed over 2 years (effective March 31, 2026)
  • Write and sign a Letter of Invitation promising financial support for the duration of the visit

Applicant Requirements (The Parent or Grandparent)

You must:

  • Be outside Canada at the time of application
  • Hold valid private health insurance from a Canadian insurer (or OSFI-approved foreign insurer) worth at least $100,000 CAD for a minimum of 1 year from entry
  • Complete an immigration medical exam with an approved panel physician
  • Demonstrate genuine visitor intent — that you will return home at the end of your authorized stay

📐 How Is Family Size Calculated for the Income Threshold?

Your host’s minimum necessary income is assessed based on family size. The following people must be counted:

  • The super visa applicant(s) (e.g., you and your spouse applying together)
  • The host child or grandchild
  • The host’s spouse or common-law partner
  • All dependent children of the host and their partner
  • Any previously approved super visa holders still covered under a prior letter of invitation
  • Any previously sponsored individuals still under an active undertaking

⚠️ Starting March 31, 2026, income from the visiting parent or grandparent can also be added to help the host meet the threshold if needed.

🖊️ How to Apply for a Super Visa

Super Visa applications must be submitted online in most cases. There are two online portals available:

  1. IRCC Portal (Standard) — for most applicants
  2. IRCC Portal – New Version — if you are 18+, applying alone, have never applied before, and are not using a representative

Paper applications are only accepted for applicants with a disability preventing online submission, or those travelling with refugee/stateless travel documents.

Application Fees Include:

  • Processing fee for each individual applicant
  • Biometrics fee (if applying for the first time — must be paid at time of submission)
  • Third-party fees: medical exam, police certificates (as applicable)

🗓️ Book a Consultation Now — We prepare your complete Super Visa application package, review all documents, and submit on your behalf with zero missing items.

⏳ After You Apply — What to Expect

Once submitted, IRCC will:

  1. Review completeness — Incomplete applications may be refused outright
  2. Potentially request an interview, additional documents, or updated medical exam
  3. If approved — send instructions to submit your passport to a Visa Application Centre (VAC) for visa printing (cannot be printed in Canada)
  4. Visa-exempt nationals receive a letter to present to a border services officer upon arrival

When You Arrive in Canada

At the port of entry, a CBSA officer will:

  • Verify your identity (fingerprint check at major airports via primary inspection kiosk)
  • Review your passport, super visa, and proof of valid health insurance
  • If satisfied, stamp your passport granting a stay of up to 5 years

⚠️ A valid super visa does not guarantee entry to Canada. The CBSA officer must be satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay. Work and study are not permitted on a Super Visa.

🏥 Health Insurance: What You Must Know

Your private health insurance must:

  • Be from a Canadian insurance company OR an OSFI-approved foreign insurer that issues policies through its Canadian insurance business
  • Be valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry (not application)
  • Provide minimum $100,000 CDN coverage
  • Cover health care, hospitalization, and repatriation
  • Be paid in full or with a deposit (quotes are not accepted)
  • Be available for inspection by a border services officer at any re-entry

💡 Insurance brokers and claims administrators do not qualify — the actual insuring company must be identified on the policy document.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can both parents apply at the same time?
Yes — spouses applying together are counted as one application package. Both must meet all individual requirements (medical exam, health insurance), while the host only needs to submit one letter of invitation listing both applicants.

Q: What if my host’s income dropped last year due to maternity leave or a job change?
Under the new 2-year assessment rule (effective March 31), IRCC will review income over two years. If the host’s combined 2-year income average still meets the MNI, this may not disqualify the application. Starting March 31, the parent/grandparent can also supplement if there is a gap.

Q: Can my host’s spouse co-sign the letter of invitation?
Yes — the host’s spouse or common-law partner may co-sign and combine their income to meet the MNI threshold.

Q: Can I work or study in Canada on a Super Visa?
No. A Super Visa authorizes you to visit only. Separate work or study permits are required for those activities.

Q: What is the difference between the 1-year and 2-year income rule?
Under the old rule (before March 31, 2026), only the most recent tax year was assessed. After March 31, IRCC reviews income from the two most recent tax years, requiring more consistent income history.
