What Is the AAIP?
The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is Alberta’s Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) — an economic immigration program that nominates foreign nationals for Canadian permanent residence based on their ability to fill labour shortages or contribute as entrepreneurs in Alberta. The program is jointly run by the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada, with IRCC making the final decision on permanent residence applications.
Alberta has been allocated 6,403 nomination spaces for 2026, and as of early March 2026, 822 nominations have already been issued — 69% of them through the Alberta Opportunity Stream. This means spaces are filling up, and applying early in 2026 is strategically important.
2026 AAIP Priority Sectors
Before diving into each stream, it is critical to understand what Alberta is focused on this year. In 2026, AAIP will prioritize draws and nominations for occupations in:
- 🏥 Health care
- 💻 Technology
- 🏗️ Construction
- 🏭 Manufacturing
- ✈️ Aviation
- 🌾 Agriculture
- 🏘️ Rural communities (designated under the Rural Renewal Stream)
While these are the primary focus areas, Alberta may still issue invitations outside these sectors.
AAIP Streams for Workers
AAIP has 4 streams for foreign workers living and working in Alberta, or planning to do so.
1. Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS)
The Alberta Opportunity Stream is designed for foreign workers who are already living and working in Alberta and have a job offer from an Alberta employer. It is the most widely used AAIP stream — 3,425 nomination spaces are allocated to AOS in 2026, with 564 already issued and 2,861 remaining as of early March.
Key eligibility requirements:
- Currently living and working in Alberta
- Valid full-time job offer from an Alberta employer
- Minimum language requirement (CLB/NCLC based on NOC TEER level)
- Minimum education: Canadian high school diploma or foreign equivalent with ECA
- Proof of legal authorization to work in Canada
💬 Book a Consultation Now — We review your Alberta employment documents, confirm AOS eligibility, and build a complete application file.
2. Alberta Express Entry Stream
The Alberta Express Entry Stream targets candidates who have an active profile in the federal Express Entry pool and whose occupation aligns with Alberta’s economic priorities. A provincial nomination from this stream adds 600 CRS points to your Express Entry profile — virtually guaranteeing an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for federal PR.
Minimum requirements:
- Active Express Entry profile eligible under CEC, FSW, or FST
- Minimum CRS score of 300
- Primary occupation must align with an AAIP pathway or provincial priority sector
- If invited with a job offer: valid Alberta employment or job offer in the matching occupation
Dedicated Pathways within the Alberta Express Entry Stream:
In 2026, Alberta has ended the Family Connection and Occupation in Demand selection pathways under the Express Entry Stream (discontinued March 17, 2025). Candidates can still claim family connection points in the Expression of Interest system but will not be invited on that basis alone.

3. Tourism and Hospitality Stream
The Tourism and Hospitality Stream is for qualified candidates who live and work in Alberta and have a full-time job offer to continue with an Alberta tourism and hospitality sector employer. This stream has a modest 2026 allocation of 150 nominations, with 32 already issued and fewer than 10 spaces remaining in the current processing cycle. Candidates in this stream should apply without delay.
Key eligibility requirements:
- Living and working in Alberta in the tourism/hospitality sector
- Full-time job offer from a designated Alberta tourism or hospitality employer
- Meet language, education, and work experience requirements based on NOC TEER level
4. Rural Renewal Stream (RRS)
The Rural Renewal Stream empowers rural Alberta communities to recruit and retain foreign workers to address local labour shortages and drive economic growth. Effective January 1, 2026, significant changes were introduced to the RRS to align with reduced federal nomination allocations.
Key 2026 changes to the Rural Renewal Stream:
- Community caps introduced — each rural community has a maximum number of endorsements per year
- 1-year endorsements — community endorsements are now valid for one year only
- TEER-based eligibility rules — occupation eligibility now strictly tied to NOC TEER classification
- Applications submitted on or after January 1, 2026, must meet the new criteria
2026 allocation: 1,000 nomination spaces, with 987 remaining as of early March
In the most recent Rural Renewal Stream draw held February 26, 2026, Alberta invited 30 candidates with a minimum score of 55 on the AAIP selection grid.
Eligibility requirements:
- Job offer from a designated employer in a designated rural Alberta community
- Community endorsement from the designated rural municipality
- Minimum language scores (based on NOC TEER)
- Canadian high school diploma or foreign equivalent (ECA required for foreign credentials)
- Sufficient settlement funds if residing outside Canada or not currently employed

AAIP Streams for Entrepreneurs
AAIP has 4 streams for entrepreneurs who plan to live in Alberta and buy or start a business.
1. Rural Entrepreneur Stream
The Rural Entrepreneur Stream is for entrepreneurs who want to start a new business or acquire an existing one in a rural Alberta community. Candidates submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and, if selected, are invited to submit a full application.
Key requirements:
- Business plan for a viable rural Alberta business
- Sufficient personal net worth and investment capital
- Commitment to actively manage the business in the rural community
- Language proficiency
2. Graduate Entrepreneur Stream
The Graduate Entrepreneur Stream is for international graduates of approved Alberta post-secondary institutions who want to start or buy a business in Alberta. Candidates must have completed a qualifying credential at an approved institution and intend to operate the business in Alberta.
Key requirements:
- Graduation from an approved Alberta post-secondary institution
- Viable business plan for a new or acquired Alberta business
- Minimum one-year post-graduation work experience or entrepreneurial evidence
- Active enrollment in or completion of an Alberta government-approved business incubator/accelerator program (may apply)
3. Farm Stream
The Farm Stream is designed for experienced farmers who plan to buy or start a farm in Alberta. This is a direct application stream — no Expression of Interest required.
Key requirements:
- Minimum 3 years of recent farm management experience
- Sufficient net worth to purchase/operate a farm in Alberta
- Proof of farming experience (income, ownership, or management records)
- Intent to own and operate a farm in Alberta
4. Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream
The Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream is for international graduates who hold a degree from a post-secondary institution outside Canada and want to launch a start-up or innovative business in Alberta. This stream requires working with a designated agency in Alberta to submit an Expression of Interest.
Key requirements:
- Degree from an international post-secondary institution
- Innovative or scalable start-up business concept
- Engagement with an AAIP-designated business support organization in Alberta
- Support letter from the designated agency
2026 AAIP Draw Snapshot
Here is a current overview of Alberta’s 2026 nomination allocation by stream:
| Stream / Pathway | 2026 Allocation | Nominations Issued | Remaining |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alberta Opportunity Stream | 3,425 | 564 | 2,861 |
| Rural Renewal Stream | 1,000 | 13 | 987 |
| Tourism & Hospitality Stream | 150 | 32 | ~118 |
| Dedicated Health Care Pathway | 500 | 56 | 444 |
| Accelerated Tech Pathway (Express Entry) | 600 | 75 | 525 |
| Law Enforcement Pathway (Express Entry) | 38 | <10 | N/A |
How a Provincial Nomination Connects to Express Entry
For candidates in the Alberta Express Entry Stream, a provincial nomination from Alberta adds 600 CRS points to your federal Express Entry score. This is transformative: candidates with CRS scores as low as 300 who receive an Alberta nomination will effectively jump to 900+ CRS — a near-certain Invitation to Apply (ITA) from IRCC in the next federal draw.
For worker stream candidates in AOS, Tourism & Hospitality, or Rural Renewal, the AAIP nomination triggers a separate provincial stream in IRCC’s system — you apply for PR directly through the provincial nomination pathway, bypassing the Express Entry CRS competition entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need to already be living in Alberta to apply for AAIP?
It depends on the stream. The Alberta Opportunity Stream, Tourism & Hospitality Stream, and Rural Renewal Stream generally require you to be living and working in Alberta. The Alberta Express Entry Stream can invite candidates from within or outside Alberta if they meet the Express Entry pool requirements and occupation priorities. Entrepreneur streams are for those planning to establish a business in Alberta.
Q: What is the minimum CRS score for the Alberta Express Entry Stream?
The minimum CRS score is 300 to be considered for an invitation, but actual invitations are issued based on draw-by-draw priorities and selection scores. A CRS of 300 is a floor — your occupation alignment with Alberta’s priority sectors matters significantly.
Q: Can I apply to AAIP and another PNP at the same time?
You can express interest in multiple provincial programs simultaneously. However, once you receive a nomination from one province and accept it, you are expected to settle in that province. Applying strategically to multiple PNPs increases your chances of receiving a nomination offer.
Q: How long does AAIP processing take in 2026?
Processing times vary by stream. To ensure timely processing, the Alberta government strongly advises including all required documents with your application — incomplete applications cause significant delays while AAIP requests clarification.
Q: What happened to the Family Connection pathway under Alberta Express Entry?
As of March 17, 2025, AAIP no longer issues invitations under the Family Connection and Occupation in Demand pathway. You can still claim family connection points in your EOI score if you have a qualifying parent, sibling, or child in Alberta who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident over 18, but this alone will not generate an invitation.
