The AAIP Graduate Entrepreneur Stream is Alberta’s most accessible entrepreneur immigration pathway, designed specifically for recent graduates of approved Alberta post-secondary institutions who want to start or buy a business in Alberta. What sets this stream apart from virtually every other entrepreneur immigration program in Canada is the absence of a minimum net worth requirement — a barrier that typically excludes younger entrepreneurs and recent graduates from business-class immigration streams.
Applicants must have graduated within the past 10 years from an approved Alberta institution, must have a viable Alberta business plan, and must create at least 1 full-time job for a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (other than themselves). An Expression of Interest with a $200 fee is required, followed by a $3,500 application fee. Provincial processing takes approximately 6–12 months, with the full PR timeline extending to 2–3 years including the business establishment period.

Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a recent graduate (within 10 years) of an approved Alberta post-secondary institution
- Must want to start or buy an existing business in Alberta
- No minimum net worth requirement (unlike most entrepreneur streams)
- Must create at least 1 full-time position for a Canadian citizen or PR (other than yourself)
- Business plan must demonstrate viability and economic benefit to Alberta
- Must submit Expression of Interest and be invited to apply
Eligibility Requirements
- Alberta graduation: Must have graduated from an approved Alberta post-secondary institution within the past 10 years. Approved institutions include publicly funded universities, colleges, polytechnics, and technical institutes in Alberta.
- Business intent: Must want to start a new business or buy an existing business in Alberta. The business must operate in Alberta and generate genuine economic activity.
- Net worth: No minimum net worth requirement — unique among Canadian entrepreneur immigration streams. Applicants must demonstrate they have sufficient personal funds to invest in and sustain the business, but there is no prescribed minimum.
- Job creation: Must create at least 1 full-time, permanent job for a Canadian citizen or PR (other than the applicant).
- Business viability: Business plan must demonstrate a viable concept with a realistic financial model and economic benefit to Alberta.
- EOI and invitation: Must submit an Expression of Interest and be invited to apply — AAIP selects applicants based on EOI scores.
The 10-year graduation window is generous compared to most academic immigration streams (which typically allow 2–3 years). This means graduates who have been working in their field for several years after their Alberta graduation are still eligible. The key is that the degree must be from an Alberta institution — degrees from other Canadian or international institutions do not qualify for this stream (the Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream covers international graduates).
Business Plan Requirements
The business plan is the centrepiece of a Graduate Entrepreneur Stream application. AAIP evaluates the plan on several dimensions:
- Market analysis: Evidence that there is a demand for the product or service in Alberta’s market.
- Financials: Realistic revenue projections, startup cost estimates, and a funding plan showing how the applicant will finance the initial investment.
- Job creation plan: A clear description of the position to be created for a Canadian worker, including job duties, salary, and timing.
- Owner involvement: Confirmation that the applicant will actively manage the business from Alberta.
- Alberta relevance: Why Alberta is the appropriate location for this business — local market advantages, sector fit, or community need.
AAIP will assess the applicant’s academic background in relation to the proposed business. A graduate who studied hospitality management proposing a restaurant, or a computer science graduate proposing a software consulting firm, presents a coherent and credible case. A plan that is entirely unrelated to the applicant’s field of study and experience is harder to support.
Business Establishment Period
Like other AAIP entrepreneur streams, the Graduate Entrepreneur Stream involves a Business Establishment Period (BEP) after provincial application approval. The applicant receives a work permit to enter or remain in Alberta, establishes the business, creates the required job, and reports progress to AAIP. Upon successful completion of the BEP milestones, AAIP issues the provincial nomination. Federal PR is then applied for through IRCC.
The BEP is typically approximately 20 months in duration, though AAIP may grant extensions if the applicant can demonstrate genuine progress toward the business milestones. Applicants must remain in Alberta during the BEP and must actively manage the business — remote management from outside Alberta or Canada is not acceptable.

Frequently Asked Questions
I graduated from the University of Calgary 8 years ago and have been working in tech since. Am I still eligible?
Yes. The Graduate Entrepreneur Stream allows graduates within the past 10 years. An 8-year-old degree from an approved Alberta institution (the University of Calgary is approved) still qualifies. Your 8 years of tech work experience would actually strengthen your business plan credibility if you are proposing a technology-related venture.
Do I need to have the money to start the business before applying?
There is no minimum net worth requirement, but AAIP expects your business plan to include a credible funding plan. You should be able to demonstrate that you have access to sufficient funds — whether personal savings, family support, loans, or investor commitments — to cover startup costs and sustain the business through its early period. Applications with no clear funding strategy will struggle during AAIP’s assessment.
Can I include a co-founder in the Graduate Entrepreneur application?
The Graduate Entrepreneur Stream allows individual applicants — each must separately qualify as an Alberta graduate with a viable business plan. If you and a partner both have Alberta degrees and want to run the business together, each can submit an individual EOI and application, potentially as co-owners of the same Alberta business. Coordinate with your representative on how to structure a co-founder application.
What happens to my immigration status while I am in the Business Establishment Period?
AAIP applicants who receive provincial approval are issued a temporary work permit (specifically for business establishment) that allows them to remain in Alberta and operate the business during the BEP. Your status in Canada is maintained through this work permit for the duration of the BEP. When the BEP is successfully completed and the nomination issued, you apply to IRCC for federal PR.
