Home/Services/Permanent Residency/Express Entry STEM Category Draws 2026: Eligible Occupations

Share:

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) category-based draws are an Express Entry selection mechanism introduced by IRCC in May 2023 to specifically recruit candidates with work experience in technical and scientific occupations. Canada faces well-documented shortages in software development, engineering, and applied sciences — the STEM category draws are a direct policy response, offering invitations at CRS thresholds typically lower than general all-program draws. For professionals in engineering, natural sciences, IT, mathematics, and related fields, ensuring the correct NOC code is entered in the Express Entry profile is the first and most critical step.

STEM category eligibility does not require a Canadian employer or a Canadian education credential. Candidates with entirely foreign STEM experience can qualify under the Federal Skilled Worker Program and be eligible for STEM category draws. This makes the STEM category one of the most globally accessible of the category-based draw types.

📋 Quick Facts

  • Government Fee: $1,525 principal applicant (incl. RPRF); $1,525 spouse; $260 per dependent child
  • Biometrics: $85 individual / $170 family
  • Processing Time: ~6 months after ITA
  • RCIC-IRB Representation: Available — Dimple Verma R708308

Eligibility Requirements

  • Active Express Entry profile eligible under CEC, FSW, or FST
  • Primary work experience in STEM NOC (engineering, natural sciences, IT, mathematics, etc.)
  • Category-based draw targets specific STEM occupations with labour shortages
  • Lower CRS cut-off than all-program draws typical
  • Both Canadian and foreign STEM experience may count toward eligibility
  • Invitation issued through category-based draw

Eligible STEM Occupations

IRCC’s STEM category targets occupations in NOC major groups for natural and applied sciences and engineering. Commonly included NOC codes span software engineers and designers (NOC 21231), computer systems analysts (21222), electrical and electronics engineers (21310), civil engineers (21300), mechanical engineers (21301), aerospace engineers (21302), chemical engineers (21303), computer and information systems managers (20012), and related TEER 1 and TEER 2 technical roles. The precise list is updated by IRCC between draw rounds.

Candidates should confirm the current NOC list by reviewing IRCC’s most recent STEM category draw notice. Use the NOC Finder to verify the correct TEER classification and NOC code for your specific role before creating your Express Entry profile.

Eligibility and Strategy

To qualify for STEM category draws, a candidate must: hold an active Express Entry profile eligible under FSW, CEC, or FST; have their primary NOC work experience coded as a qualifying STEM occupation; and meet the language and other requirements of their underlying stream.

STEM draws have typically cleared at CRS scores in the 475–505 range, compared to general all-program draws clearing 510–540. For STEM professionals with scores in the 470–510 range, the category draw pathway is the most realistic route. Those below 470 should simultaneously explore provincial nominee programs — several provinces actively recruit STEM workers through their own streams — to obtain the 600-point CRS boost of an enhanced provincial nomination.

Government Fees, Processing Time and Document Checklist

Fees are identical to all Express Entry streams: $1,525 principal applicant (including $575 RPRF), $1,525 spouse, $260 per dependent child; biometrics $85 per individual or $170 family. Processing time is approximately 6 months from complete application submission.

  • Active Express Entry profile with correct STEM NOC
  • Employment reference letters specifying role, duties, hours, and salary
  • Language test results (IELTS/CELPIP or TEF/TCF)
  • Educational Credential Assessment (for foreign degrees)
  • Police clearance certificates
  • Medical examination from a designated physician

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my entire career have to be in STEM to qualify for STEM category draws?

No. What matters is that your primary NOC code — the occupation entered in your Express Entry profile as your main qualifying work experience — is on IRCC’s current STEM category eligible NOC list. If your most recent and primary role is in STEM (e.g., software engineer), the fact that you previously worked in a non-STEM field does not disqualify you.

Are IT and software roles included in the STEM category?

Yes. IT and software occupations are consistently the largest group within STEM category draws. Software engineers, systems analysts, database analysts, and cybersecurity analysts are among the most commonly targeted roles. Specific NOC codes vary by draw — checking the most recent draw notice confirms which codes were included.

What CRS score do I need for a STEM category draw?

STEM category draws have cleared in the 475–505 CRS range in 2023–2024. Cut-offs change with each draw based on pool composition and the number of ITAs issued. Use the VGIS CRS Calculator to estimate your score and compare it against the most recent published STEM draw results.

Can I apply for a provincial nominee program for STEM workers at the same time?

Yes. Pursuing a provincial nomination concurrently with your Express Entry STEM strategy is encouraged. Several provinces — Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta — have PNP streams specifically for technology and STEM workers. A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points, which effectively guarantees an ITA in the next draw. VGIS can assess both federal and provincial pathways simultaneously.
