Home/Services/Permanent Residency/Express Entry Trades Category Draws 2026: NOC List

Share:

Skilled trades category-based draws are an Express Entry selection mechanism targeting candidates with work experience in construction, industrial, and maintenance trade occupations. Introduced in May 2023, these draws address documented labour shortages in Canada’s skilled trades sector — shortages that general Express Entry draws, which favour university-educated professionals with high CRS scores, were not effectively addressing. By issuing dedicated ITAs to tradespeople at lower CRS thresholds, IRCC has opened a meaningful permanent residence pathway for electricians, welders, plumbers, pipefitters, carpenters, and related tradespeople.

Trades category eligibility overlaps significantly with the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST) but is not identical. Candidates who are eligible for FST under Express Entry are the primary beneficiaries, but FSW-eligible candidates with trade NOC experience can also qualify if their primary NOC falls in the targeted category. Correctly identifying and entering the trade NOC code in the Express Entry profile is essential.

📋 Quick Facts

Eligibility Requirements

  • Active Express Entry profile under CEC, FSW, or FST
  • Primary work experience in eligible skilled trades NOC (TEER 2 or 3)
  • Targeted trades include electricians, welders, plumbers, carpenters, heavy equipment operators
  • Category draw issues ITAs to skilled trades candidates specifically
  • Lower CRS than all-program draws
  • Job offer not required for ITA but strengthens CRS score

Eligible Trade Occupations and Eligibility

IRCC’s skilled trades category targets NOC TEER 2 and TEER 3 construction, maintenance, and industrial trade occupations. Commonly included codes include industrial electricians (NOC 72200), construction electricians (72201), plumbers (72300), pipefitters (72302), welders (72106), carpenters (72310), heavy equipment operators (72400), and millwrights (72400-series).

To qualify for trades category draws, a candidate must have an active Express Entry profile eligible under CEC, FSW, or FST, with their primary NOC reflecting the eligible trade occupation. Job offers are not required for category draw eligibility, though a valid Canadian job offer adds CRS points. Provincial or territorial trade certifications (including Red Seal) also add CRS points and strengthen the overall profile. Use the NOC Finder to verify your trade’s NOC TEER level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Canadian job offer to get an ITA through a trades category draw?

No. A job offer is not required to receive an ITA through a trades category draw. The draw selects candidates based on CRS score among those with qualifying trade NOC experience. However, a valid Canadian job offer adds 50–200 CRS points, which can meaningfully improve your ranking in the pool and increase the likelihood of receiving an ITA in a given draw round.

What CRS score typically clears in trades category draws?

Skilled trades category draws in 2023–2024 cleared at CRS scores in the 430–470 range. These are significantly lower than general all-program draws, reflecting the program’s intent to open pathways for tradespeople who may not score as high as university-educated professionals in the general pool. Monitoring IRCC’s published draw results provides the most current data.

Can I qualify for a trades category draw if my trade experience is entirely outside Canada?

Yes, if you are eligible under the Federal Skilled Worker Program. FSW accepts foreign work experience. If your primary NOC code is in an eligible trade and you meet FSW requirements (language CLB 7, qualifying trade experience, and 67-point grid score), you can qualify for trades category draws even without Canadian experience.

How is a trades category draw different from the FST Program?

The FST Program is an Express Entry stream with its own eligibility requirements (2 years trade experience, job offer or certificate of qualification, CLB 5 language). Trades category draws are a draw mechanism within Express Entry that selects candidates with trade NOC experience at a lower CRS threshold than general draws. FST-eligible candidates are typically well-positioned for trades category draws, but so are FSW-eligible candidates whose primary NOC is a qualifying trade.
