Canada Opens Online Passport Renewal to All Eligible Adults (July 2026)

On July 28, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced that online passport renewal is now available to all eligible adult Canadians in Canada. The daily cap that limited who could use the service has been lifted. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can now complete your renewal from home — submitting the application, photo and payment digitally — instead of mailing documents or booking a Service Canada appointment. Here’s what changed, who qualifies, and how to file cleanly.

What was announced on July 28, 2026

The news release from the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, confirms three things:

• Online passport renewal is now open to all eligible adult Canadians in Canada — no more daily user limit.
• Online renewals follow the same 20-business-day service standard as simplified adult renewals submitted in most Service Canada Centres and by mail.
• The service includes real-time status updates so applicants can track their file as it moves through processing.

In-person and mail-in renewals remain available for Canadians who prefer or need them, and anyone who needs a passport faster than 20 business days must apply in person at a Service Canada Centre or passport office offering 10-business-day, express, or urgent service.

Who can renew online — full eligibility checklist

The online service has its own eligibility rules, which are stricter than in-person or mail renewals. Per the official canada.ca instructions, you must meet every requirement before creating an account.

Online-specific requirements

• You’re applying to renew your own passport (no proxy renewals).
• Your home and mailing address are in Canada, and you’ll be there to receive the passport by mail.
• Your passport expires within the next 6 months or is already expired.
• If your passport expires in more than 6 months, you can’t renew online.
• You don’t need the passport in the next 20 business days plus mailing time.
• You accept that your current passport will be cancelled and no longer valid as soon as you file the online renewal.
• If you have upcoming travel plans, apply in person instead.
• You’ll keep the same name, date of birth, place of birth and gender identifier on your new passport.
• Your current passport is not damaged, seized, or surrendered.
• You’re not reporting a lost or stolen passport as found (if you recovered a previously reported passport, you must return it to IRCC and use a different renewal channel).
• Your current passport has no observations (notes on a separate page — for example, an oversized name or a diplomatic passport). Most people don’t have observations.

Regular renewal criteria (also must be met)

• You applied for your current passport when you were 16 or older.
• Your current passport is a regular (blue) passport.
• Your current passport was valid for 5 or 10 years.
• Your current passport shows your place of birth.
• Your current passport was issued in the last 15 years.

If you can check every box above, you can renew online. If any single item does not apply to you, use in-person or mail renewal instead.

What you need before you start

Your digital passport photo

All passport applications — including online renewals — require a photo taken by a commercial photographer. For online applications specifically, your digital passport photo must:

• Be taken in person by a commercial photographer.
• Be no more than 6 months old when you apply.
• Not be a scanned copy of a printed photo.

Practical tip from the official instructions: ask your photographer for both a digital file and a printed copy. That way you keep flexibility to apply online, by mail, or in person if something changes.

An IRCC Portal account

The online renewal runs through the IRCC Portal – New version. You can sign in with a GCKey username and password or with a Canadian Interac® Sign-In Partner (through your bank or credit union). Two-factor authentication is required — save the recovery codes IRCC issues when you set up your account. Full sign-in and account-help instructions are on the IRCC online account page.

Processing time and what happens after you submit

• Processing takes up to 20 business days, plus mailing time. The service standard matches Service Canada Centre and mail-in renewals.
• Your current passport is cancelled the moment you submit the online renewal — it’s no longer a valid travel document from that point on. Do not file online if you have any near-term travel.
• Your new passport will be mailed to your Canadian mailing address. IRCC does not currently deliver passports renewed online outside Canada.
• You’ll be able to check status in real time inside the IRCC Portal.
• Canada’s passport service guarantee — announced alongside this update — means applications will be processed within 30 business days or the passport is free.

When you should NOT use the online service

• You need your passport soon. Online renewals follow the 20-business-day standard. If you have travel inside that window, apply in person at a Service Canada Centre or passport office that offers 10-business-day, express, or urgent service.
• You are outside Canada. The online service is only available to Canadians whose home and mailing address are in Canada. If you’re abroad, apply by mail or visit a Government of Canada office overseas.
• Your passport expires in more than 6 months. Online renewal is only open if your passport expires within the next 6 months or is already expired.
• You need to change your name, date of birth, place of birth, or gender identifier. Changes to those fields disqualify you from the online renewal path.
• Your current passport is damaged, seized, or surrendered, or you’re reporting a lost or stolen passport as found and it hasn’t already been returned to IRCC.
• Your passport contains observations on a separate page — those cases require in-person or mail renewal.

Practical tips for a clean online renewal

• Confirm eligibility before creating your IRCC account. The canada.ca instructions state this expressly — check every criterion first, because the online path has its own rules on top of the regular renewal criteria.
• Have the passport in front of you. You’ll need the passport number, issue date, expiry date, and the exact spelling of your name as printed. Any mismatch delays the file.
• Book your commercial photographer first. Ask for a digital file suitable for online submission plus two printed copies as a fallback. Photos older than 6 months are rejected.
• Do not submit if you have travel plans. Your current passport is cancelled the second you submit — you cannot travel on it during the 20-plus-business-day processing window.
• Save the IRCC Portal confirmation and reference number. You’ll use these to check status and, if needed, to raise concerns after the service standard expires.
• Track mailing time separately. The 20-business-day standard is processing. Delivery from IRCC’s print facility to your Canadian mailing address is on top of that.

What this means for immigration cases

For clients we work with at VG Immigration, a valid Canadian passport is a background requirement for a wide range of files — sponsorship applications by Canadian citizens, citizenship-based travel documents, and any Canadian client accompanying a foreign national spouse or family through visa processing abroad. The online option makes those background renewals much faster to complete, particularly for clients in Brampton, Mississauga, and the broader GTA who previously waited weeks for Service Canada appointments.

A few case-planning notes:

• If your Canadian passport is being renewed online, do not schedule any international travel — including biometrics appointments abroad for family members — during the processing window. Your existing passport is cancelled on submission.
• If you’re the Canadian sponsor in a spousal sponsorship file and IRCC needs a copy of your valid passport as part of proof of status, submit that copy before filing the online renewal so the sponsorship file already has a valid document on record.
• For permanent residents renewing PR cards, this announcement does not apply — this is passport renewal only. PR card renewals continue to be processed under the separate PR card program.
