OINP Approval After an Expedited Processing Request: A Client Success Story

We are pleased to share a recent Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) approval for one of our clients. Their work authorization was set to expire in approximately one week when they came to us. Because the client was inside Canada and their work permit was expiring in fewer than 30 days, our team submitted a request for expedited processing to the OINP through the official webform. The client then followed up by phone with the OINP, and the officer confirmed on the call that the file was eligible for expedited processing. The nomination was approved within one week of the webform submission.

Below is a detailed, RCIC-authored guide to how to request expedited OINP processing when your Canadian status is expiring in 30 days or less and your nomination is still in process, plus the client story that shows why this pathway matters.

The client story: OINP approval in one week with less than seven days of status left

By the time the file reached us, the clock was already at the wire. Our team’s priorities were, in order:

1. Confirm the client’s legal status in Canada and whether maintained status under IRPR section 186(u) could apply if a work permit extension was filed in time.
2. Verify that the OINP application was substantively complete — Applicant Consent Form, ID, employment evidence, work-experience letters, credential evaluation, language results, all uploaded and legible.
3. Draft and submit a webform enquiry to the OINP using the correct enquiry category and attach documentary evidence of the expiring status.
4. Have the client call the OINP contact line to confirm that the file had been received and flagged for expedited review.
5. Prepare a contingency plan (work permit extension on maintained status, visitor record, or restoration) in case the nomination did not issue in time.

The webform request was submitted. The client then phoned the OINP; the officer on the line confirmed the file was eligible for expedited processing. One week later, the OINP nomination was approved. That approval is an important milestone toward permanent residence — and a reminder that early planning, a clean file, and disciplined follow-up are what turn an urgent request into a decision.

What does “expedited processing” mean at OINP?

The OINP does not publish a formal “expedited stream.” What it does offer is a webform enquiry category that lets applicants flag two specific situations: a general urgent or special circumstance, and — most relevant here — the fact that a work permit is expiring within 30 days after the OINP application was submitted. Whether processing is actually accelerated is a discretionary decision made by OINP officers on the facts of your file. There is no fee, no guaranteed timeline, and no appeal for a declined expedite request. What a well-prepared request does is put the urgency on the officer’s radar with supporting evidence, so if your file is otherwise decision-ready and eligible, the officer has what they need to prioritize it.

Do you actually qualify to request expedited OINP processing?

The webform category is available to applicants who meet these baseline conditions:

• You have already submitted your OINP application (not just an Expression of Interest — you must have received a file number and paid the application fee).
• You are physically inside Canada and hold temporary resident status as required under O. Reg. 422/17, section 3(3).
• Your work permit expires in fewer than 30 days from the date you contact the OINP.
• Your file is substantially complete — no outstanding mandatory documents, no unresolved Notice of Incomplete Application (NOIA), no pending representative changes.

If your permit has already expired, or if you are outside Canada, or if the OINP has already asked you for missing documents that you have not provided, an expedite request will almost certainly fail. Fix those issues first.

Step-by-step: how to submit an OINP expedited processing request

Step 1 — Open the official OINP webform

Go directly to the OINP portal and click “Contact us through our webform”. Never use a third-party form. The URL should end in ontarioimmigration.gov.on.ca.

Step 2 — Choose the correct enquiry type

The enquiry type dropdown is the most important field on the form. The OINP publishes two categories that apply to expiring-status situations:

• “I submitted an application, and my work permit expires in less than 30 days” — use this if you already have an OINP application on file, you are inside Canada, and the permit expiry is within 30 days.
• “I have an urgent or special circumstance” — use this only for other genuinely urgent situations (medical emergency, humanitarian factors, employer-driven deadlines) that do not fit the 30-day permit category.

Picking the wrong category slows the file. If your work permit expires in fewer than 30 days, always use the permit-specific category.

Step 3 — Write the enquiry text (1,000-character limit)

The Your enquiry field is capped at 1,000 characters. Do not waste it. A tight, well-structured message reads better than a long one and leaves room for the officer to focus on your evidence. Use this structure:

• Opening line: your OINP file number, stream, and date of application submission.
• Status facts: current work permit type (open, PGWP, employer-specific), issue date, exact expiry date, and where you are physically located.
• The ask: a single sentence requesting expedited processing due to imminent status expiry.
• Confirmation: that your file is complete, all mandatory documents are uploaded, and no NOIA is outstanding.
• Closing: that you have attached supporting evidence — your work permit and, if applicable, employment letter confirming continued employment need.

Step 4 — Attach the right evidence

The webform allows document attachments. At a minimum, include:

• A clear PDF or JPG of the current work permit, showing the holder’s name, permit number, and expiry date.
• A copy of the OINP application submission confirmation or the payment receipt, so the officer can locate the file quickly.
• Where the urgency is employer-driven, a short letter from the employer confirming that the position remains vacant for the applicant and requesting continuity.
• If the applicant has already filed a Bridging Open Work Permit or a work permit extension, attach the IRCC Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR) — this shows that maintained status under IRPR 186(u) has been triggered.

Step 5 — Complete applicant and representative sections accurately

The webform requires the applicant’s legal last name, first name, date of birth, email, and telephone number. It also asks for a unique identifier: choose OINP application number, Expression of Interest profile number, Express Entry profile number, or None of the above. Whenever an OINP application number exists, use it — it is the fastest way for staff to locate the file.

Applicants working with a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant should select “Representative” under Relationship to applicant and include the representative’s CICC number. Representative access to the file must already be authorized through the OINP e-Filing portal — if it is not, that authorization is a prerequisite before the expedite request is submitted.

Step 6 — Submit and log the confirmation

After you check the authorization/notice-of-collection checkbox and click Submit, the webform issues a confirmation on screen. Screenshot it. Save the confirmation with a timestamped filename in the same folder as your OINP application copies. This is what you produce if you later need to prove that the request was submitted before status expired.

Step 7 — Follow up by phone to confirm eligibility

After the webform is submitted and the confirmation screenshot is saved, have the applicant call the OINP contact line at 1-866-214-6820 (toll-free within North America) or 416-327-0374, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET. In our recent successful file, this is exactly what closed the loop: after we submitted the webform, the client called the OINP and the officer confirmed on the line that the file was eligible for expedited processing. That confirmation set expectations and gave the client something concrete to point to. The nomination issued within one week of the webform submission.

The call should be short and factual: state the OINP application number, confirm the work permit expiry date, and ask whether the file has been flagged for expedited review. Do not use the call to add new arguments or send new evidence — anything material should go through the webform or the e-Filing portal, not the phone line.

Step 8 — Do not wait to file the parallel work permit extension

An expedite request is not a substitute for filing a work permit extension before your permit expires. IRCC recommends filing at least 30 calendar days before expiry. If a valid application to extend or change conditions is submitted before the current permit expires, IRPR section 186(u) preserves work authorization on maintained status until IRCC decides the extension. That maintained status protects the applicant while the OINP processes the file — with or without an expedite.

What OINP officers actually look at

Expedite requests are decided on the file’s substance, not on the drama of the message. Officers typically weigh:

• File readiness. Is the OINP application complete, with every mandatory document already uploaded? Files with outstanding gaps are not accelerated — they are returned or delayed.
• Timing plausibility. Was the OINP application submitted with reasonable lead time, or was the request filed as a last-minute rescue attempt?
• Program pressure. How does the request line up against current OINP intake volumes, stream priorities, and any 2026 Ontario Workforce Priority Stream transition work.
• Consequences of delay. Would refusal to expedite cause the applicant to fall out of status or lose lawful employment? Documentary evidence beats assertion.
• Compliance history. Has the applicant met earlier deadlines — 17 calendar days to submit after ITA, timely responses to NOIA letters, and correct Applicant Consent Form.

Common mistakes that sink expedite requests

• Selecting “I have a question about stream criteria” or “I want to inquire about the status of my application” instead of the permit-expiry category. General enquiries route to a different queue.
• Sending a 900-character narrative and forgetting to attach the work permit PDF.
• Using a representative’s email in the applicant contact fields without listing the representative separately with a CICC number.
• Submitting an expedite request before the OINP application itself is submitted. There is no file to expedite until the application is in the system.
• Filing an expedite request after the work permit has already expired without also filing restoration under IRPR section 182 within 90 days.
• Assuming an expedite equals approval. It does not. It flags urgency; the file still has to meet program eligibility.

What this case demonstrates

• Apply as early as possible when you may be eligible for an immigration pathway. Early filing preserves the option to request expedited processing later.
• Keep a close record of every immigration-status expiry date — work permit, study permit, visitor record, PGWP.
• Submit complete, accurate, and well-organized supporting documentation the first time. A clean file is what makes an expedite request credible.
• Where genuinely urgent circumstances exist, communicate them clearly and attach evidence — not adjectives.
• Do not assume an expedited-processing request will be approved. Each application is assessed individually on its facts.

Important note about urgent requests

Applicants in Canada whose work permits are expiring soon may have a legitimate reason to contact the OINP, but an expedited-processing request is discretionary. It is not automatic, it is not appealable, and it does not guarantee a faster decision or an approval. Each immigration matter depends on its specific facts, the supporting evidence, program requirements, and processing circumstances at the time of review.
